O'Grady was born to Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as financial advisor. Her parents raised her in Wheaton (Illinois) and she was a graduate of the North High School in Wheaton. She was a part of a couple of commercials for television before moving to Los Angeles. Her first job was a Montgomery Ward model, where she also appeared in a variety of commercials. She debuted on the big screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was then offered a recurring role in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
